Meet The Team
My experience in the field prior to private practice was in all levels of treatment for mental health and substance use disorders. I consider myself to be transparent and straightforward which I encourage the individuals I meet to do the same. I feel the therapeutic relationship is vital to someone feeling comfortable in a counseling setting.
I have a strength based approach to therapy where I assist individuals in recognizing their own strengths to manage their lives. I truly believe in our motto “Redefine Expectations, Redefine Self” for every client we serve.
I am a firm believer in self-care so I pride myself in hobbies such as the gym, attending sporting events, and exploring the local community. I love cooking and experiencing different cuisines and consider myself a “foodie”.

Hi, I'm Melinda and I started at Redefine Therapy in 2024. I am a licensed counselor, a board certified art therapist, and an artist. Therapy with me usually starts with talking and then I weave in art therapy, writing, psycho education, and EMDR techniques based on what you are working on. I have a gentle approach to therapy because I know some things people come to therapy for can be difficult to talk about. My training and background are in trauma informed therapy.
I want to assist you in finding the right tools to tell your story. It's important for you to know that you do not need any experience with art to work with me. Come as you are!

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AT THE FIRST VISIT?
Your initial session is an opportunity for our therapists to get to know you, your needs, and to ensure a good therapeutic fit. As part of this we will discuss with you your motivations for seeking therapy and begin to map out treatment objectives in line with your goals. We will take time to assess your current symptoms, such as feelings of anxiety, depression, grief, or any additional symptoms you may be dealing with. Because we recognize the relationship between physical and mental health, we also thoroughly review with you your current and prior medical conditions and medications or supplements that you are taking.
-
Initial sessions last for approximately one hour. Regular therapy sessions after this will be around 50 minutes in length either weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. You and your therapist will work together to determine the best frequency schedule for you based on your concerns and treatment objectives.

EMDRIA has the following definition on their website explaining EMDR therapy:
“EMDR is a structured therapy that encourages the patient to briefly focus on the trauma memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements), which is associated with a reduction in the vividness and emotion associated with the trauma memories. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an extensively researched, effective psychotherapy method proven to help people recover from trauma and PTSD symptoms. Ongoing research supports positive clinical outcomes showing EMDR therapy as a helpful treatment for disorders such as anxiety, depression, OCD, chronic pain, addictions, and other distressing life experiences (Maxfield, 2019). EMDR therapy has even been shown to be superior to Prozac in trauma treatment (Van der Kolk et al., 2007). Shapiro and Forrest (2016) share that more than 7 million people have been treated successfully by 110,000 therapists in 130 countries since 2016. “ (Source: https://www.emdria.org/about-emdr-therapy/)
