About Me
Hello, my name is John Stacy, and I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Addiction Counselor based in Norfolk, Virginia. I’ve been practicing since 2012 and bring over a decade of experience helping individuals navigate some of life’s most difficult challenges.
In 2023, I opened Redefine Therapy, LLC with a simple but powerful mission: to offer the kind of compassionate, personalized care I would want for myself or my loved ones. I live by our motto “Redefine self, Redefine expectations.” To me, it’s about uncovering the parts of you that have always been there, waiting to be seen, supported, and empowered. When we begin to see ourselves in a new light, we naturally start to shift what we expect from life, relationships, and even ourselves. Healing often starts with that internal redefinition because when you change how you see yourself, everything else starts to change too.
My approach is grounded in respect, empathy, and authenticity. As I often tell my clients, “Everyone needs support at some point—this just happens to be your time, and that’s perfectly normal.”
I truly believe that while life can be unfair and incredibly difficult, the strength and resilience I’ve witnessed in others has shown me that people are capable of overcoming even the most overwhelming obstacles. It’s an honor to walk alongside my clients as they redefine what healing looks like for them.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT AT THE FIRST VISIT?
Your initial session is an opportunity for our therapists to get to know you, your needs, and to ensure a good therapeutic fit. As part of this we will discuss with you your motivations for seeking therapy and begin to map out treatment objectives in line with your goals. We will take time to assess your current symptoms, such as feelings of anxiety, depression, grief, or any additional symptoms you may be dealing with. Because we recognize the relationship between physical and mental health, we also thoroughly review with you your current and prior medical conditions and medications or supplements that you are taking.
-
Initial sessions last for approximately one hour. Regular therapy sessions after this will be around 50 minutes in length either weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. You and your therapist will work together to determine the best frequency schedule for you based on your concerns and treatment objectives.

EMDRIA has the following definition on their website explaining EMDR therapy:
“EMDR is a structured therapy that encourages the patient to briefly focus on the trauma memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements), which is associated with a reduction in the vividness and emotion associated with the trauma memories. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an extensively researched, effective psychotherapy method proven to help people recover from trauma and PTSD symptoms. Ongoing research supports positive clinical outcomes showing EMDR therapy as a helpful treatment for disorders such as anxiety, depression, OCD, chronic pain, addictions, and other distressing life experiences (Maxfield, 2019). EMDR therapy has even been shown to be superior to Prozac in trauma treatment (Van der Kolk et al., 2007). Shapiro and Forrest (2016) share that more than 7 million people have been treated successfully by 110,000 therapists in 130 countries since 2016. “ (Source: https://www.emdria.org/about-emdr-therapy/)
